陈绮贞 | 流浪者之歌

My heart was swelling in pain when I was watching this video and listening to the song. Of course I cried. I cried till my chin was trembling haha. I made me think a lot. So much.

How beautiful will the world be if everyone was more helpful, responsible, grateful... But at the end you know that there won't be a world like that. We shouldn't keep halting our steps to wait for a world like that. Move along. Move along while remembering that there is someone like-minded out there. And it will be less painful. And it will be more bearable.

I can live on, even when I hate this ugly world, because I know that there's someone with me. For every thought I have, every opinion I have about the good and bad in life, I know that there's at least one person out there who will agree with me. That's when I can swallow my pride, my discontentment, the unjust, and move on. Then once in a while there comes a treat - a scenery, a compliment, a friend - that comes along to support me. They are the lovely ones. Think of them as treats, don't see them as necessities.

But don't ever agree for the sake of agreeing. You don't have to force yourself to accept everything that comes your way. You don't have to feel bad for disagreeing and rejecting, because there is no such word as 'rejected'. Eventually there's someone who will adore that 'fault'. If it's not you, it's someone else. It's a matter of perspective. Don't feel bad for it. Don't blame yourself for it. Don't accept and eventually realise that you would never be able to commit to it.

Take it slow, forgive.
Stay true to yourself, you have someone's support.
And live on, because you are somebody's someone.

Bella Koh is the owner of my favourite local Instagram account. I'm fortunate to have met her once at her pop-up store for Flea and Trees. I remember that I had to down some red wine to pluck up enough courage to exchange a few words with her haha. She's really nice and approachable and the food that she whipped up tasted as good as they looked. I still have not forgotten the taste of her homemade tortilla chips that came with a mango salsa dip.

Bella's feed has inspired me to cook for its enjoyment, collect items that are reminders, live life in a way that I will never regret.

If you are interested to know more, you can read the interview she did with Honeycombers Singapore. The short interview also features her beautiful home and wardrobe.

Necessary Provisions.

Just returned home and I'm typing this out just in case I forget the taste of my very first cup of Chemex pourover. I've already forgotten the name of the brew. There were two to choose from and I chose the beans from Ethiopia but I can't recall its full name. The barista described it as 'bright and fruity'. I was really surprised when I took the first sip. Fruity is indeed the word to describe the cup of coffee. I'm no coffee connoisseur but I am going to describe it because it was really interesting. You are not suppose to drink it with sugar or milk. The instance you take a sip, it tasted a little like Kopi-O haha but then immediately after you would be able to taste the 'fruitiness' which was then followed by a slight sourish taste. Drink it while it's hot. It turns more sourish when it's chilled to room temperature. I'm so glad I tried it. I was afraid that it will taste bitter, and the fact that I didn't know how to pronounce 'Chemex' did stop me from trying it at other cafés. Thanks to Google, it's pronounced as 'Chem-ex' as in 'Chem-istry' and 'Ex-cited' and I got to know from Shermaine that good coffees shouldn't taste bitter. And so, I had my first cup today!

The menu at Necessary Provisions is known to be quite simple and some say 'too basic'. They are better known for their coffees and I really didn't mind the Beef Pastrami, Brie and Whole Grain Mustard sandwich that I had. I think The Plain's Beef Pastrami sandwiches have primed me not expect so much from the sandwiches I can get elsewhere. Haha. The cookies at Necessary Provisions, however, should be pretty good. I tried the Forty Thieves Cookie and I told Cassandra that it's my favourite cookie in the world. I actually had a small bite of the cookie when I was tasting the coffee and it was really good. Ordered the big one and somehow it was less amazing, though still yummy. I love the generous amount of sesame that they used for the cookie.

Necessary Provisions is located at Eng Kong Terrace and many bloggers have stated that it's really ulu. True, but I don't think it's difficult to find. Alight at Clementi MRT, take bus 173 at Clementi's bus interchange and alight 8 stops later, at the stop 'After Eng Kong PI'. You won't have to count the number of stops because 173 is an SMRT bus and the name of the next stop will always be reflected on a screen you can find on the bus. Great for kiasi people like me haha. After you alight, cross the zebra crossing which is on the right of the bus stop, then continue walking down towards the right direction. Turn into the first lane and you should be able to spot some really old blocks of houses. The café is just behind the old blocks and has a black exterior. Typing this out because I couldn't find a proper set of directions online. If you stay in the West, it's a great café to visit!

First of the Instagram series, featuring my favourite Instagram account @winter_named_winter (previously @condominiumcote), managed by Shiomi who's based in Hokkaido. Shiomi is like this fictional explorer who's always out and about - not in busy cities but with quiet, beautiful nature. I love her mushroom/bird/butterfly-hunting pictures. The wildlife seems to love her as much as loves them. Her meals are the simplest but most comforting.

I've always found it difficult to pick a favourite; be it a colour, piece in my wardrobe and what-not, but favourite Instagram feed easily goes to @winter_named_winter.

Go Outside.

Go Outside by Cults.

I really want to go out, I really want to go outside and stop to see your day.
You really want to hole out, you really want to stay inside and sleep the light away.

I think it's good to go out, because if you don't you'll never make a memory that will stay.
I think that you should wake up, I think I want to live my life and you're just in my way.
